From stores to apartments

Sint Anthoniestraat in historic Gouda

In the smaller streets of the historical center of Gouda, some retail spaces stay unused, while at the same time young starters can’t hardly find small and affordably apartments in this day and night lively neighbourhoods. Contributing a bit to this new balance, we transformed two classic store houses and designed six compact apartments. One of the two street facades was declared a municipal monument and we chose to treat both facades likewise, restoring them carefully. With the back façade facing a narrow canal at the south, we had more design freedom and added new façade openings with so called “French balconies”. The historical roof structure we kept visible from the inside and we extended them towards the south, cladding them with zinc and adding sunny roof terraces to the smallest apartments.
